D3 v4 broke basically all the APIs used by this project. I wanted to do something very similar to this, so I went ahead and learned d3 by porting your code to the new APIs. The files also had mixed line endings, so I changed them to Unix endings. I tried not to change more than I needed to, so it could probably use a little tidying.
